Backlinks and visitor traffic

backlinks clinic

For any web page to be ‘ranked’ in the search engines and attract visitors it’s essential it has backlinks. To understand backlinks there are three things you need to consider, the source from which the backlinks originate, the anchor text of the backlinks and what’s on the page to which the backlinks directs the visitor to.

The number of backlinks

The amount of backlinks to a page is one of the key properties the search engines consider when deciding where to position the page in the SERPS (Search Engine Page Results).

The source of the backlinks

Backlinks are like votes - the higher the quantity of votes (backlinks) the more authoritative the page is viewed by the search engine. But ‘votes’ passed via backlinks from trusted or authoritative pages to a page have greater influence over the search engines consideration of this page than backlinks originating from pages with lower ‘trust’ or authority. Government (.gov) and educational (.edu) sites are great examples of sites that are authoritative and trustworthy.

Google Page Rank

Google has the concept of ‘page rank’, this is the property it attaches to a page it considers to have accumulated authority over time from backlinks pointing towards it.

The ‘anchor text’

When you see a backlink on a web page it often has a label a word or text associated with the content at the page to which this backlink is pointing, what this ‘anchor text’ says has influence upon the value the search engines attribute to the link. If the content of the page is about ‘parenting’ and the backlink on the page is labeled or given the ‘anchor’ text ‘parenting’ then the search engines consider this to be of more value to the searcher looking for results related to ‘parenting’ than if the backlink was labeled ‘babycare’.

Common problems

It’s not unusual for novices to confuse the quantity with the quality of backlinks and easily be frustrated by their lack of progress Having a significant volume of backlinks to your page doesn’t automatically mean the search engines will see your page as relevant.

How to build backlinks

So let me share with you my fail safe approach for acquiring backlinks that will make the search engines take notice of you and bring quality and relevant traffic to your web site.

  1. It is essential you select the right keywords before you expend any effort whatsoever.
  2. I always set out to put together a keyword cloud.
  3. I always start with a single ‘top’ level keyword or key phrase which has substantial visitor traffic.
  4. The fastest and cheapest method to find out how much traffic a keyword or key phrase is getting is to use the Google keywords discovery tool.
  5. I carefully consider words and search phrases related to my primary phrase and create my ‘cloud’.
  6. I then generate content in the form of articles and videos containing backlinks with the right ‘anchor text’ to my ‘money’ or ‘target’ page and disperse these to the various directories.
  7. My guiding principle is to write content that will attract visitors and persuade them to follow the backlinks to my target pages as well as send backlinks.

Backlinks authority and Google

backlinks

Phew, this is a multi-faceted subject and I want to emphasise it’s not an exact science. But here is what I have learned in my analysis at the Backlinks clinic:

Authority - basics

The more authority your web pages have the higher you will rank on Google. Authority means that searchers trust you and your information. The good news is that authorities trusted by humans are also trusted by Google. A great example is the .edu and .gov suffixes. These suffixes imply they are authoratitive sources of content and it’s an established fact that as far as Google is concerned backlinks from these web addresses to your web pages will send authority to your web pages. Another shining example is Wikipedia as the contents here are largely added by by tribes of people as opposed to a single source.

So it follows that authority is significantly influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative sites link to your web pages then you inherit their influence and in the eyes of Google you become more authoritative and so the trust in your web pages by Google goes up.

How Google determines what is and isn’t authoritative is kept secret for good reason and aligns with Google’s thinking of “Do no evil”. The last thing the web needs is an individual or a group manipulating the formulae that Google untilzes in its efforts to try and regulate probably the most significant technological resource of this period in history.

How not to get Backlinks

And on this thought it’s valuable to state some distasteful sources and practices of building backlinks that Google not only dislikes but appears to be acting to ‘’categorize as negative authorities. In no particular order of severity, the prime offenders are:

  • Paid backlinks – web pages where individuals buy and sell backlinks
  • Comment spam – entries that have links on blog pages that are just not associated to the main content.
  • Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or otherwise
  • Fast growth – there are a large selection of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t dumb. Any sudden rise in the number of backlinks is going to register on Google’s monitoring systems, especially if it’s a recently registered domain.
  • Backlinks from villainous web pages – these are particularly nasty as you are guilty by association - need I say more.

*There is another factor where I may be on shakey ground, but large media portals appear to get a lot of authority and I have definitely seen significant quantities of the same article over and over again on different portals with no penalties, I am still monitoring this, only as a portion of of the results I am seeing go against the consistent behaviors I normally expect to see. More on this is in a future article….

How back links affect the number of visitors to your website

backlinks

Before putting any effort whatsoever into creating any web pages you should have considered how you intend to get people to visit and ‘consume’ your content. Be it selling a product or service or conveying an opinion or information you want to get attention and this means getting traffic. Put all of your efforts into getting as much traffic as you can from the search engines. If you are just starting out there is no better form of traffic than the type that comes from the search engines as it wont cost you a penny and it very targeted.

Search engine revenues rely upon the accuracy and relevance of the results they deliver to their users. The number one goal of every search engine is to attract users and increase loyalty and this can only be done by delivering what the searchers are looking for in a relevant and timely fashion. The more users come back the stronger the search engine brand and the more money they make. The search engine objectives are very similar to the ones you should set for your web pages.Make your users experience your number one priority so they return to your web pages time and time again.

So how do you do this?. You have two options and you can use both. You can write useful and relevant content or you can use the advertising methods offered by search engines and other properties.

From a search engines perspective there are only keywords and key phrases without these content on the Internet simply doesn’t exist. Keywords tell the search engines what the user is looking for. The search engine goes and looks in its vast index of web pages and selects the most relevant web pages and then returns them in a list that is ordered in terms of relevance and authority. The search engines decision about what pages to display in the results are based upon two key factors relevance and authority.

Relevance is a function of the keywords in the text of the webpage and authority is determined by the number and type of back links . The search engines determine the order in which web pages are indexed on the results pages by the number of back links to the page and their respective authority.

Back links determine the fate of a web page and are a key consideration.

Back links have two important properties their ability to influence your page ranking and their ability to bring traffic to your site from places on the Internet. People searching for and reading relevant content will click on the back links that contain text related to their quest and subsequently be directed to your web pages. The technical term for text associated with a back link is “anchor text” and this play a role in the value attributed to every back link discovered by the search engines. Each back link has a value associated with it which can vary depending upon its origin.

Web pages with back links from authoritative pages acquire authority in the eyes of the search engines. The higher the authority of the web page ‘sending’ the back link the more authority is likely to received by your web pages.

BREAKING NEWS: Calling all Wordpress Blog Owners

About me

I am self educated and have closely followed the evolution of Internet Marketing for just over five years. On average I personally answer around six hundred questions about Internet Marketing through my blog every week. I understand the pressure of what it is like to struggle financially, pay the bills and feed a family so I do this for money (because I have a family to support) and to help others in a similar situation.

In my testing I have come across a big number of Internet Marketers who look the part on paper but rarely deliver methods that work. Until recently the results of my testing have been distributed on a tiny number of websites whose owners have persuaded me to contribute in return for helping me in my evaluations.

Over 600 products tested

The total number of ‘products’ I have tested over five years is just north of 600, naturally I will only be writing about products that are still for sale. Every product review is a direct result of me using the product in anger and naturally I will be sharing the rough and the smooth with my subscribers.

Simple to use and organised directory

On my blog I will be dividing the ‘products’ summaries into groups, rating each product on the level of skill required, listing the prerequisites, how long you should expect to wait for results and the amount of money you can expect to spend.

First Report - The ‘blueprint’ for Wordpress blog success

The first subject I’m going to tackle is Wordpress Blogs as this is not just a great subject for newbies to begin but a lot of blog owners don’t appreciate the opportunities they are missing. How search engines see back links and what they do about them

backlinks

Before putting any effort whatsoever into creating any web pages you should have considered how you intend to get people to visit and ‘consume’ your content. Whether your website is commercial or not then sooner or later you are going to want to attract visitors. You should devote your energies to getting the search engines to direct as many visitors as possible to your web pages. The search engines generate targeted traffic and the great news is its costs you nothing.

Search engines make their living from delivering relevant and useful results to their users. The number one goal of every search engine is to attract users and increase loyalty and this can only be done by delivering what the searchers are looking for in a relevant and timely fashion. The more often the searchers return the greater the search engines fortunes. The objectives for you and your web pages is precisely the same as the search engines.Position yourself in the mind of your users as a relevant source of information and make them visit over and over again.

So how do you go about doing this?. There are two key ways you can do this. You can work hard to produce very good content and publish it on your web pages or you can advertise using methods such as Pay Per Click or Google Adwords.

Search engines have a simple philosophy that nothing exists on the web without a keyword or a key phrase . Keywords tell the search engines what the user is looking for. The search engine refers to a gigantic index to retrieve a list of the web pages it deems to be the most relevant to the keywords the user entered. Search engines use relevance and authority to decide what pages get returned and presented to the searcher.

Relevance is determined by the occurrence of keywords in the web page content and authority is largely derived from back links from other web pages. The order of the list of results displayed by a search engine are conducive with the authority and volume of the back links to each page.

Back links are the most important factor in optimising your pages for the search engines.

Back links have two major functions – routing traffic to your web pages and helping the search engines determine the ranking of your web pages in the results returned by a user search. Browsers who discover and click on back links containing keywords associated with their interests will be directed to your web pages. ‘Anchor text’ is the correct term to describe the text appearing as a link and contributes to the value given to the link by the search engines. Back links can vary in value.

The authority on the page from which a back links originates can influence the potency of the link to your web page. The higher the authority of the linking pages, the higher is the authority passed to your pages.

Getting More Backlinks

If you’ve been blogging for a while now, you’re probably wondering about what backlinks are, and how they can help you make money blogging more effectively.  Backlinks, which are also called “incoming links”, are links to your blog or blog pages that are put up on another blog or website.  If a fellow blogger puts up a link that directs his readers to your site, that in itself counts as a backlink.

Of course, backlinks aren’t just some little detail that bloggers can forget about.  In fact, they’re responsible for your success as a blogger, and have a direct effect on your blog’s ranking on major search engines.  The more backlinks your blog has, the higher its rank will be on Google and other search engines.  If you have more backlinks for a keyword that other blogs are already targeting, your ranking on search engines will be much higher, therefore making you more accessible to the online community.

Backlinks must contain the keyword your blog post is targeting to have any impact on your rankings for that keyword. This is called “anchor text” and the rest of this article will talk about getting backlinks containing your anchor text back to your specific blog post.

1.  Comment on other blogs:
The best way to introduce yourself to other bloggers is by posting comments on their entries.  Of course, you shouldn’t just post any comment for the sake of putting up one.  Instead, leave a thoughtful comment that’s relevant to the post in question, and don’t forget to include your URL at the bottom of your comment.  If you want to take things a step further, use your targeted keyword as your username, which will also be linked back to your own blog.

2.  Hop onto forum boards:
Are you part of any forum board that deals with the primary topic of your blog?  You can get an instant backlink there by editing your signature to include a link (with the right keyword) to your blog.  Once you’ve done this, aim to become an active participant in the forum.  Make intelligent contributions to discussions to show your expertise in the subject.  By creating a good reputation on forum boards, your backlinks stand a bigger chance of fetching you a larger load of traffic.

3.  Link baiting:
Take advantage of hot news about your niche and put up an entire blog post dedicated to that issue.  Link baiting essentially means that you’re dangling out a blog post that’s bound to reel in a lot of backlinks, mostly because your post talks about something that people are very interested in.  Although backlinks aren’t guaranteed, you jack up your chances at getting linked at if your post is unique or offers a new perspective on the issue.  Remember to put up your keywords as the post’s title!  That way, webmasters can easily copy that and put it up as an anchor text when they link to your post.

As you can see, getting more backlinks isn’t the hardest thing to do.  Just don’t neglect the part about dishing out good content that will impress readers and keep them coming back to your site.  In the end, there’s still no better way to promote yourself – and getting backlinks – than by writing great posts that your visitors will remember you for.

What Is Niche Marketing, and Do I Need It?

Are you interested in internet marketing?  Check out these indespensible tools to catapult your marketing efforts. I hightly recommend: Article Marketing Automation

What Is Niche Marketing, and Do I Need It?

In ecology, a niche refers to the place or position occupied by an organism or a population within an ecological community called the ecosystem.  It is the term which defines the role the organism or the population plays in the general scheme of things.  The niche an organism or a population holds is the one responsible for dictating the ability of the species to survive.  It is the one which spells whether an organism or a population will perish or thrive.

In marketing, a niche refers to a service or a product that occupies a special area of demand.  It is that small corner in the market that accounts for a certain kind of specialty concerning an unmet customer need.  To be able to attract a strong, solid market, the choice of a niche product should ultimately complement the website one owns.  It is through this scheme that he is able to generate a specific market for the niche product he is trying to sell.

Niches are involved in niche marketing, the process of finding market segments that are small but potentially profitable nonetheless.  To maintain a profitable quantity of sales, this marketing strategy relies on increasing the loyalty of customers so that their corporate objectives will be met or surpassed.  Illustrative of this is the fact that the quality of the product or service sold will generate customer satisfaction and, consequently, customer loyalty.  The result is profitability garnered through a solid market base that trusts in the ability of the product or service to really deliver.

One of the great things about niche marketing is that it encourages those who indulge in it to be unique and one-of-a-kind.  Here one is not forced into the lion’s den and made to compete against established marketers.  He is made to occupy a strong and secure position that ultimately wins him a real place in the market.  Niche marketing differs from other online marketing strategies because this particular quality allows it to operate almost autonomously and without having to contend with corporate sharks that tear each other to pieces.

If you would observe the company that delivers the daily paper to your doorstep for a business case study, you will come to learn that the newspaper publisher hires reporters, writers and other important staff to create the contents and deliver the papers to their readers.
In addition to the above mention, the publisher has to invest regularly in heavy duty machineries and tons of papers in printing tons of newspapers on a daily basis.
And in order to ensure that the newspapers are delivered on time, the publisher appoints agents at every part of the covered territory.
So, how does the newspaper company make money? It is obvious that selling a copy of the papers at less than a dollar would not even be able to even fund the operations.

The answer? Selling advertising spaces! You have definitely seen lots of advertisements in the newspaper. The publisher simply sells advertising space in the papers to advertisers who want to leverage their advertising efforts on the paper’s high readership.
On the same analogy, you can make money the exact way from your newsletter: simply by selling advertising space to prospective advertisers!
If your mailing list size exceeds 1,000 (5,000 is recommended) subscribers and beyond, you can start selling advertising space for say, $10.00 per sponsor ad.

In this manner, you turn every issue you send out to your subscribers into a profit-pulling device. And since there is virtually no end to the stream of advertisers as products, services and businesses are cropping every single day in every industry imaginable, so are your money making opportunities. Such as these

Also known as the “name squeeze page” or “lead capture page”, you can build your mailing list by funneling all of your would-be subscribers through the creation of a landing page. Not only do you do the work just once, your traffic driving efforts can be focused onto just one effective method.
The following are tips in creating a successful landing page that converts visitors into subscribers on a very huge percentage.

Success Tip 1: Offer a freebie in exchange for your visitor’s email address. I very much endorse this method of building your mailing list. You can offer a special report or a sample of your paid product to your visitor in exchange for their details such as name and email address.

Success Tip 2: The landing page must be written professionally. When writing your page, treat it as if you are writing a sales letter. While you are not necessarily making a hard sale or try to get someone to buy your product upfront, being able to entice your visitors to give their details to you is just as important as selling.

Success Tip 3: Other than your opt-in form and perhaps important disclaimers and terms, there shouldn’t be any other links on your landing page. Choose a specific niche such as

Success Tip 4: Rub in the benefits of the freebie you are offering more than a mere subscription to your newsletter. You should focus most of the attention of the letter on encouraging your prospective visitor to download your free offer. Later, you gently remind your prospect that he or she has nothing to pay but just merely subscribe to your newsletter in exchange for the freebie.

As a final reminder and conclusion, in order to build trust, you can include your hand-written signature or a photo of yourself explaining where you are coming from and how you can help your visitor through your free report on offer.

Here’s Why You Need To Use Landing Pages

Are you interested in internet marketing?  Check out these powerful tools to boost your marketing efforts. I hightly recommend: Unique Article Wizard

Here’s Why You Need To Use Landing Pages

All the products that you want to sell online are ready.  You have already signed up with the Google Adsense program or with other affiliate marketing programs and you have already prepared the ad you want to post on your affiliate’s site.  Your mind is now set to being the next most successful online businessman.  But is there anything else that you might have forgotten to prepare?  Maybe none.  But how about your landing pages?  Are they all set for your business?

Landing pages are simply web pages where visitors are directed to whenever they click a result in a web search or whenever they click a web ad.  For affiliate marketing, landing pages would refer to the web page where you, as a merchant, would want your potential customer to be directed after clicking your ad on your affiliate’s website.  Landing pages are, at most times, nothing really different from other web pages in a particular website, especially if the said website is an e-commerce site.  Some online businessmen would even use the homepage of their websites as the landing page for their ads.  Are these businessmen making a big mistake?  Or should you follow their method in creating landing pages for their ads?

Well, you can always follow what most online retailers do, directing their potential customers to the homepages of their websites.  But if you want to achieve something more from your online business, and if you want to earn a lot of profits, you better create a special landing page for your web ads.  Why?  Here are a few reasons why you need to use landing pages for your web ads.  And take note, it would do you a lot better if you create a great landing page than a so-so one.

Reason no. 1: It is the only way you earn conversions in an affiliate marketing program.

There are a variety of affiliate marketing programs today, but most of these programs let the merchant pay the affiliate in a pay per click basis.  Basically, all you have to do is sign up with the program and submit your ad.  The program owner would then distribute your ad to various affiliates who would then place your ad on their websites.  Whenever your ad is clicked, a visitor would be directed to your landing page and you would have to pay the affiliate for his service.

As a merchant, you earn in an affiliate program through conversions—that is whenever a visitor that is directed to your site actually buys a product on your site.  Without these conversions, you actually earn nothing from the program.  Also, the more visitors that your affiliates have directed to your site, the larger would your expense be.  And the only way that you can recover from these expenses is through conversions.

Now, you sure won’t get any conversion if you have posted an ad on your affiliate’s site without an actual landing page for the potential customer to be redirected into.  It’s just like advertising a product without actually having a store to sell your product.  Your advertisement may be enticing enough to encourage people to purchase a product, but without the landing page, how will they know how to purchase the product.
