Apply Leverage for Your Affiliate Business by Re-Using Content~Leverage Your Internet Business by Re-Using Content}

The Wikipedia dictionary defines leverage as “A force compounded by means of a lever rotating around a pivot” and “By extension, any influence which is compounded or used to gain an advantage.”  The extension of that definition has the most applicability for home companies.

Leverage is frequently defined in either financial or mechanistic terms, but it applies much wider than that as well, including the world of internet marketing.

So how shall we interpret “any influence” for our home-based companies?

One of the most used ways for an affiliate income business to maximize our profits is by re-using accessible content.  I’m sure you’ve seen the countless ebooks currently advertised on the internet - most of these are examples of re-using content, although some may have been originally written as ebooks, most started out as a single blog post, or a response to a customer email, perhaps even a collection of FAQs.

In the world of finance, the leverage benefit is typically described as a ratio of some kind, for example, a debt-to-equity ratio.  Such ratios are useful for bookkeepers, but that is not the audience I’m addressing here.

What advantage can we realize by leveraging our existing content?  Consider the following simplistic example:   Assume that it takes you 10 hours to write a document for use with a single customer and then sell it to that customer for .00.  You have earned $50.00, but it took 10 hours of your time to acquire that .00; effectively, you would have earned about $5 per hour (less than the current minimum wage) for your effort and made zero profit.

If, however, you take that same document (and change it to remove any proprietary info) and offer it as an ebook via the Web for $19.95, and that you finally sell 100 copies of your published ebook.  You would have earned $1995, less the $50 it cost you to create the first text minus another $5 to customize it for any customer/proprietary info, leaving you now with a profit of $1940.00.

This simple example demonstrates the benefits of leverage, specifically the increased profit obtained from re-using existing content.

Once we become aware of leverage, we can learn how to apply it in many different ways to our home-based businesses.  This article has addressed one of those ways.  Further articles will discuss other ways that internet businesses can improve ROI by using leverage.

When you started out with the thought to create products for consumers, you probably never thought you’d be helping other businesses soar. Just remember that every sale they make helps put another dollar in your pocket.

Your New Online Business: Positioning

When you begin a new web business, there are so many things to do that it is easy to postpone addressing some of the essential aspects of marketing. One of the decisions that you should not omit from your initial planning is your business’ positioning.

Basically a marketing position identifies your unique place in your niche. The key word here is unique. What makes your enterprise different from your that of your competitors? What features and benefits do you offer your target customers or clients that the other players don’t?

-Client Service - Nearly all businesses claim they have great service. If you can provide exceptional service compared to your competitors, your clients will remember you. I’ll never forget calling a foul tempered plumber to try to get him to come to my home for an emergency on a weekend. He acted like he didn’t want my business and then told me it was going to be $200 for him just to show up. I told him “never mind” and hung up. I called roto-router who gave me tremendous service, a guarantee, and the bill was less than the other guy’s service call fee. I now use them for all my plumbing.

-Extraordinary Features and Appealing Benefits - Identify clearly what it is that you stress in your business operations or with your products or services. Maybe you are a “full service” dry cleaners or you specialize in problems just like theirs. Possibly you offer more size options of your apparel than any other online store.

-Price Point - Not everyone can offer the lowest prices and still make a profit. But you must be certain to convince your prospect that your products and services are worth whatever it is that you charge.

-Negative Features - People probably find some things at your competitors annoying. Maybe they feel that they have to wait too long to get an answer to their questions. If that’s a good angle for you, try not phrasing it as a special positive feature, but frame it as a negative that they don’t have to worry about with your business. For example, you might say, “You’ll never have to wait for an answer to your questions with us.”

-Credibility - Some businesses like to brag about their long history. If your business is new, you need to find a different way to establish your credentials. Perhaps you might say that you bring fresh ideas to your industry or niche. Adding logos from recognizable, trusted sources helps as well. Join the Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau. Work to obtain the endorsement of a magazine or a professional organization. Display those endorsements prominently. Plan for the future by soliciting testimonials.

-Others - Literally anything that differentiates you from your competitors can be part of your positioning strategy - your clever URL, your hours of live help, the way your site looks. Small business owners need to think creatively here.

Proper and effective positioning is critical from the first day that you open your website for business. Traffic to your website is a precious resource. You need to be sure that your unique position is visible and clear as soon as that first potential customer arrives. After all, you need that person to return time after time. You’ll have time later to worry about other aspects of your continuing online business development, but the time is now for clear positioning.

Apply Leverage for Your Online Business by Re-Using Content

Wikipedia defines leverage as “A force compounded by means of a lever rotating around a pivot” and “By extension, any influence which is compounded or used to gain an advantage.”  The latter part of that definition has the most applicability for internet businesses.

Leverage is generally described in either economic or mechanical terms, but it has much broader application to a lot of contexts, including the world of internet marketing.

So what does “any influence” mean for our internet businesses?

One of the easiest and quickest ways for a home business to maximize our profits is by re-using accessible content.  Most of the ebooks currently advertised on the internet reflect content that has been re-used, although some may have been originally written as ebooks, most originated as a single blog post, or a response to a customer email, perhaps even one one or more FAQs.

In the world of finance, the leverage benefit is generally described as a ratio of some kind, for example, a debt-to-equity ratio.  Such ratios are useful for accountants, but that is not the audience I’m addressing here.

How can we calculate the leverage advantage to be gained from re-using our existing content?  Consider the following simplistic example:   Assume that it takes you 10 hours to write a document for use with a single customer and then sell it to that customer for $50.00.  You would have earned $50.00, but it would have taken you 10 hours to get that much money; effectively, you would have earned about $5 per hour (less than the current minimum wage) for your labor and made zero profit.

Assume, however, you take that same document (tailored to remove any customer-specific or proprietary information) and offer it as an ebook via the Web for $19.95, and that you finally sell 100 copies of your published ebook.  You would have earned $1995, less the $50 it cost to develop the first paper minus another $5 to remove any customer/proprietary info, leaving you with a much larger profit of $1940.00.

That’s the power of leverage, specifically the benefit resulting from re-using existing content.

Once we become aware of leverage, we discover that there are many different ways to apply it to our businesses.  This article has addressed one of those ways.  Separate articles will discuss other ways that online businesses can improve ROI by using leverage.

Making Money On The Internet: Avoid The Pitfalls

There are many reasons why people fail at Internet marketing and Internet business in general. For the most part everyone starts out with a broad goal and idea and starts doing research to see what it is that they have to do or learn to make it happen. The problems begin as soon as they do their first search on Google for “Internet business opportunities” or “Internet marketing”. They are immediately assaulted by thousands of results that for the most part are useless. There are so many scams and get rich quick schemes that are so well introduced that it’s no wonder that people get sucked in. The sales copy for these websites is excellent. The use of some very talented copy writers and professional graphic designers makes these "opportunities" irresistable especially to the newbie marketer.

Not all is lost and not everything is a scam

Fortunately there are plenty of legitimate opportunities and courses that will get you going in the right direction. Before diving in to a business I would recommend that you look around and find the legitimate course programs and think about taking one. But also you have to think about and decide how you want to make money.

One very popular model of business is niche blogging or niche marketing. While they are similar they are not the same. In niche blogging you create a blog, preferably a self hosted Wordpress blog, and you “blog” about a particular subject or “niche”. You might choose dieting or dog grooming or even sports card collecting. You then begin to write articles about your subject of choice and begin the process of driving traffic to your blog. Even with good writing skills and depending on the time you dedicate it can take up to a year to see some very good results. You make money a couple of different ways. You can sell an eBook on the subject that either you wrote or bought PLR rights to. One reason PLR is popular and easy to work with is because you can claim ownership. You can also use Google Adsense to have Google post ads on your blog and get paid when people click on those ads. Of course in either case you have to have a good amount of traffic coming in.

Niche marketing is a bit different in that you publish a site sometimes referred to as a mini-site, due to the fact that you just publish one page as the sales page and write a compelling sales copy (Page) to sell your product. A lot of people that do that use pay per click advertising to drive traffic and use services like PayDotCom.com to find others to sell their product and pay them a commission. One good example of this is MyResellSoftware a site that sells software to people who would like to start a business selling software.

Selling Software As A Business

The nice thing about MyResellSoftware is that they give you everything you need to get up and running in no time. You can literally have a site published with about 1 to 2 hours of work (depending on your skill level) and all you really have to do is insert your information like PayPal account and email address and your name. But the rest of the site is 100% finished and ready. You would be hard pressed to find a better looking website that is ready to publish. The software looks great and the graphics are excellent. The sales page for the individual software titles is written by a professional copy writer so once you get some traffic the site should convert some sales.

There are other sites that I have seen that sell a “business in a box” concept but few do it as well and as complete as MyResellSoftware. While some of the others I’ve seen I have liked they sell PLR eBooks which are a dime a dozen and therefore much harder to market well and make a good profit. Of course if you can write your own eBook, a quality eBook at that, then you can also make some good money by selling the eBook either for the niche it was written or as a PLR title.

In my next article I will discuss other forms of Internet business including PPC Marketing which can bring you tremendous riches but which can also leave you broke and destitute if your not careful. I’ll also discuss some courses that I am currently reviewing. I got my hands on a few popular ones and let you know how they stack up. In the meantime do your research carefully and don’t go with the first offer that comes along.

Leverage Benefits Internet Marketers

Leverage is the ability to secure a great advantage from a small investment - whether that investment is time, effort or money.

We generally think of leverage as the mechanical gain that results from using a lever.  In fact, Archimedes once stated, “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.”

But leverage isn’t limited to the laws of physics - it applies in many other situations as well.

In business, Change Agents often speak of altering one or more business “levers” in order to change the organization’s structure or performance.  Unfortunately, in this economic climate, those business levers are often perceived negatively, resulting in job cuts, down-sizing, bankruptcies, or other forms of corporate re-organization.

But leverage has many positive uses as well.

People apply financial leverage when they use borrowed funds to increase their ROIs, or when they use calls or puts to control large numbers of stock for much less cost than if they purchased the stock.

home based businesses use leverage when they work online.  Simply by being online, they’ve removed the limitations of geography (and largely, time as well) and leveraged their advertising dollars, since it requires about the same amount of money to create an announcement that reaches only a few people as it does to create an ad that is global.

If we were managing a small “brick and mortar” store, we might be satisfied with traffic that numbered in the hundreds, but as an affiliate internet marketer, we want massive traffic numbering in the hundreds of thousands, or even millions - and not just any prospects, but highly qualified prospects.

We are utilizing leverage when we use tools such as Google AdWords:  we use the Google technologies to generate targeted traffic for us and send it to our website.

The Web provides us with many forms of leverage, but they basically all boil down to the use of technology.Technology can provide the best leverage.

Most affiliate internet marketers are familiar with the use of autoresponders and search engines, etc., but they frequently fail to make full use of the technology lever in their back office processes - including everything from managing sales leads to fulfilling the order and taking care of the follow-on billing and customer service issues.

Those online businesses that take fully leverage technology are the ones who will succeed in this competitive environment.

The Easiest Way to Make Money Online

You have may have read many headlines similar to this one above, or make promises like this one. You probably have spent quite a bit of time reading blog posts with title like this one. After reading the article, you might have thought is was bunk… no way I can sell that; I can’t promote that, I can’t put that on my website… or whatever that! IT WILL RUIN MY REPUTATION!

Well, that isn’t necessarily so. I’m going to give you some tips that will give you an opportunity to monetize your website or blog, while preserving your brand. One of the best and easiest ways to monetize your online properties is to join some affiliate programs and advertise them on your site.

Affiliate programs are the answer

Why affiliate programs? Simple. When you are an affiliate of a affiliate marketing program, you can start selling products without having to. All the work of writing an eBook, or recording an audio track, or programming a software product is taken care of by someone else. But that’s not all the advantages. You also don’t have to create any marketing graphics- those are all created for you by the person who builds the product and is running the affiliate program.

Another big benefit is that you really don’t have to keep track of finances or money. The better affiliate programs will more than likely provide you with affiliate management tools that are based on one of the top affiliate management software program. These programs will help you optimize your marketing efforts so that you get the most out of the affiliate program.

Five tips for choosing affiliate offers to promote

  1. Look good earnings potential - You want to make sure that if one of the people you refer to an affiliate offer buys, that you will make some decent money. Many people think affiliate offerings that offer high percentage payouts are better overall. I would prefer to find affiliate program that sell high ticket items and pay large commissions. This affiliate program for promoting music teacher websites offers the opportunity for you to earn $200 for a sale with monthly recurring income of $10.
  2. Choose programs your readers will like - It is critical that you choose affiliate programs and offers that your audience will appreciate and be interested in. It wouldn’t be very bright to choose to promote affiliate programs and products for knitting and crochet products on a site that is dedicated to professional football. However, if you have a website that helps people find careers is sales, it would be great to promote something like How to Get Into Medical Sales.

  3. Look for affiliate programs powered by software - When you sign up for an affiliate program it will quickly become obvious if the owner of the program is serious about helping affiliate members be successful. If you are redirected to a page powered by a top-tier affiliate marketing software program, you can infer that this is a serious affiliate program. If you get an email message that says ‘here is you affiliate link’ you might want to think carefully about investing any time. Their are several top name brands like iDev Affiliate, LinkShare, and JROX JAM. My favorite is JROX JAM, which you can get for free here: http://websitesthatdrivesales.com/recommends/free-affiliate-management-software.htm

  4. Make sure the website is NOT anonymous - What I mean is, make sure that there are real people standing behind the website, people with good reputations, who take customer service seriously. Website owners who let you know who they are, give you contact information with phone numbers aren’t very likely to be fly-by-night. They are more likely to be legitimate business people. If you can find a picture, bio, and phone number of the affiliate site owner, chances are they will behave legitimately. You will also be able to research them to find any complaints about their program. Peggy McKee, the Medical Sales Recruiter, is one of the country’s leading sales recruiters - she proudly announces her site ownership on the about pages like this one: http://30-60-90-day-sales-plan.com/about/

  5. Choose affiliate programs that have support programs - If you are choosing a piece of software to buy, you probably wouldn’t purchase it if there was not support mechanism in place. You should use the same criteria when evaluating affiliate website offerings. Affiliate website program owners that don’t put support systems in place - something like a ticket system or help desk software - probably won’t care about any their products or customers, and eventually they won’t are about you. When they do, then you can be rest assured that they are trying to keep customers satisfied. If they AREN’T keeping customers happy, their poor service will reflect poorly on you, and tarnish your image.

Here are a couple of affiliate programs that I recommend if your site’s visitors would be interested in these subjects. One is an affiliate program for a sales interview tool that targets sales professionals - you can check it out here: http://30-60-90-day-sales-plan.com/affiliate-program-details/. The other is a program that has a broader appeal - it targets people who own businesses that either have no web presence or under performing websites; you can get all the information for it here: http://websitesthatdrivesales.com/blog/home/affiliate-program/
